Three Wheeled Buggies
If you're looking for a buggy to jog with or just a compact stroller for the neighborhood, three-wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver, even in tight spaces.
If you want a smooth ride on your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels that swivel. three wheel pushchairs are susceptible, however to punctures. Be prepared with an emergency repair kit.
Frame made of sturdy material
New figures show that three-wheeled buggies that were the symbol of the decade that were more expensive than common sense, are in a steep decline. They have been replaced by four-wheelers that are able to handle a wider variety of terrain, while also looking swanky and being easy to push.
The idea is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy ground and rough pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear, make it easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and 3 year old and found that it was able to withstand grass, cobbles rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath wrote "it is sturdy to push and very solid when traversing difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need periodic pumping) offer built-in suspension that was very comfortable for my children.
Another thing to consider is the size of the seat and shape. It is important for the seat to be large enough for your child to be comfortable and allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies will have an option to lie flat completely while others will only allow a parent facing one.
An excellent option for taking on off-road and muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. This buggy is suitable for a single child from birth, and can be adapted to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for toddlers and infants from birth until age 4, and includes a bumper and raincover, a new 5-point harness, and a huge cushioned seat. The storage options are excellent as well, with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood and an easy-to-access pouch on the rear of the seat unit.
Wheels with a larger diameter
Larger wheels mean that your buggy will be more stable on rough terrain - perfect for off-road buggies. In addition, they allow you to maneuver the pushchair through narrow spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have wheels that swivel on the front, which help you navigate tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This is particularly useful when you crash into trees or a kerb. The front wheel will lift slightly to keep it from hitting it.
A lot of 3 wheel pushchairs have air-filled tyres, which means they can be used on different terrains and are more flexible than 4-wheeler. They also tend to be lighter. They are prone to punctures, and you'll need to have an repair kit and spare inner tubes on hand.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and the Venicci Carbo lux are among our top 3-wheelers. These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels, which she claims "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles" and are able to go up or down kerbs. They also come with a suspension system that, in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".
Buggies with larger wheels may be quite wide, and may struggle to fit into narrow spaces. This could be problematic if you intend to use it for jogging or you need to get through narrow doorways while on the move. Most models come with small folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.
Easy to maneuver
One of the major advantages of a three-wheel buggy is that it can be much more maneuverable particularly with a child on the way. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels can turn on a dime, and are easy to navigate, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as parks, cobblestones, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her toddler and newborn and wrote: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground with the swivel rear wheel particularly useful. I was also awed by how well it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. I found it to be extremely stable when going downhill or over uneven ground."
The only drawback of this great mobility is that the 3 wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean that it can struggle in tight spaces, something to keep in mind if you live in a city region. If this is a problem then a 4-wheel buggy may be a better option for you.
